Shout-out to the Ottawa Social Media Crowd
In this top photo: an EventBot, me, and Kelly Rusk – media darling, blogger extraordinaire, and alumni of the superb PR program at Algonquin – at the program’s annual gala. They celebrated 25 years this fall – congratulations! With me in the lower photo is the amazing Caitlin Kealey – Communications Brain (she knows everything/everyone) – who volunteered to help us recently at the Humane Society Walkathon. Just two of many who are doing some serious moving and shaking. :)
This post is a quick thank you (the first of many I’m sure) to people of all shapes and colours who are involved in Ottawa’s vibrant social media scene. You’ve really been great friends to EventBots over the past year and a half. Some of our greatest moments have been thanks to you.
I guess it’s not surprising considering EventBots is all about listening and you’re the group that’s all about conversation. You’re also early adopters, you’re involved in all kinds of innovation (and craziness), and you’re just plain friendly. You volunteer, you belly-dance and you provide helpful advice when there’s a fire. (All first hand knowledge.)
EventBot remembers back to Social Media Breakfast (SMB) Ottawa 1, hosted by our friends at Ramius. Organized by Simon Chen, Ryan Anderson and Rob Lane, SMB presented the perfect crowd of well-spoken, media saavy people who were not afraid of the camera lens! It was great to have videos of people leaving their Twitter handles and blog urls – all in the name of engagement. (Maybe that’s the norm now, but way back in 2008 it was pretty nifty.) For anyone who hasn’t been, these breakfasts continue to be a hub for anyone who is interested in social media, good conversation, business, coffee and the great view from the Gowlings offices on Elgin St. You don’t need me to re-cap though, there’s plenty of content out there that attests. Mark Blevis is one consistently fabulous source.
Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that there’s been quite a lot of connecting (and some exploding – you know who you
are) in Ottawa over the past couple of years, owing in part to social [fill in the blank]. Despite all the time we love to spend online, I think many would agree that we couldn’t do without the face-to-face connections we can make at live events around this city. (Btw – do check out Girl Geek Dinners) Hope to see you at one soon.

Thanks for the kind words, SMB sessions and conversations provide lots of great content, so I can’t take all the credit. :)
Yikes! I put a comma instead of a period. I’ll defend myself by saying it’s 5:51am.
